Longitudinal Study of Ageing and Health in Viet Nam

The Longitudinal Study of Ageing and Health in Viet Nam (LSAHV) is the first longitudinal, nationally representative study on aging in Viet Nam.  This comprehensive study gathers information from community-dwelling Vietnamese aged 60 and over, encompassing insights from both their primary or potential caregivers and adult children.

The study aims to:

  • investigate the health status and well-being of the Vietnamese older people,
  • assess the determinants of health status and transitions in health status and overall well-being.

Conducted in 2018, the baseline survey utilized a multistage sampling design, designating provinces as primary sampling units, villages as secondary units, and older persons (OP) as the ultimate units of analysis. The LSAHV is also the first aging study in Viet Nam to use the Short Portable Mental Status Questionnaire (SPMSQ), a cognitive assessment tool employed to assess the eligibility and cognitive fitness of OPs to respond to factual questions.

This study provides information on the various aspects of the health, economic, and overall well-being coming from 6,050 people aged 60 and above, their caregivers and adult children. A deeper understanding of ageing and health within the country is poised to be a valuable resource for shaping future policies concerning the older population.

The LSAHV is part of a comparative study of ageing and health in Viet Nam and the Philippines and is funded by the Economic Research Institute for ASEAN and East Asia (ERIA). The study is implemented by the Institute of Population, Health, and Development (PHAD).

We extend a warm welcome to scientists, researchers, and policymakers who wish to utilize the LSAHV dataset for academic and policy purposes. If you are interested in accessing this valuable dataset, please adhere to the instructions below on how to download the baseline dataset of LSAHV.
